RECENT ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My paintings generally vacillate between abstraction and symbolic realism, as each seemingly functions differently as a pictorial language; yet emotionally for me, are the same. I mix symbolic figurative portrait painting, atmospheric perspective and intuitive surface markings to respond to an experience that is specific and nonspecific at the same time. Figurative elements merge or align themselves to that which is psychologically unexplainable, but hopefully felt by the viewer at a deeper level. For those isolated paintings that do not contain abstraction, large passages of color are meant to be read in a psychological context.

Edward Lucie Smith, in his 1972 book, Symbolist Art, argues states that:

The rise of abstract art, in particular, has tended to focus our attention upon the work as a thing itself, wholly identified with the art process. Any art which is described as symbolist must necessarily reject such an attitude. Behind the shapes and colours to be found on the picture-surface, there is always something else, another realm, another ordering of meaning.[1]

My opinion differs: I believe it is possible to mix the two languages of symbolic realism and abstraction to represent an alternative to the nineteenth century symbolist style, as both have a similar syntax of color and value. Abstraction, through mark and gesture, can call upon a psychological resonance in the viewer’s mind referring to the physical world and experience, whereas realism traditionally more visually obvious in narrative meaning, can do the same. When these two languages are set in tandem, they can offer the viewer, when formally and conceptually scrutinised, a symbiotic interplay of meaning.

The size of the work is this series are variable; some of which are oil, and others acrylic. Techniques include traditional trompe l’oeil processes and the additive and subtractive methods of non-objective of non-objective process painting. –Jean Gallagher 2021

Philosophy of Teaching Overview

My teaching approach combines studio art, arts administration (professional aspects of arts at the undergraduate and graduate level) as well as contemporary art history (late Modern to Postmodern).  I have taught studio courses which include all levels of drawing and painting (undergraduate and graduate), emphasizing either atelier painting styles (skill-building in form, space and color) or contemporary art which emphasizes Late to Postmodern thinking (inclusive of painting/drawing, installation art, cross-discipline and interdisciplinary media), or a combination of the two.  I believe in preparing students professionally for the art world and its challenges, and have overseen numerous independent studies and internships which place students in experiences with non-profit as well as profit spaces.

Philosophy of Administration Overview

I believe in fairness, positive communication, and all-inclusive research which takes into consideration university, college, and departmental operational and visionary balance.  As an organized planner who addresses long and short term outcomes, my goal is to make sure that operations and interpersonal relationships are maintained in a smooth and professional manner.  I possess both insightful and practical fiscal planning, as well as the understanding of the  methodologies of accreditation, assessment and departmental goal-oriented targets.  As a long time faculty member who has served on numerous committees I am skilled in grant-writing.  I feel that my knowledgeable experience forms the basis of my leadership skills and enjoy new challenges.  As a tenured practicing artist and professor, I understand the needs of those undergoing the tenure process and his/her teaching, professional development, and committee requirements.  Furthermore, I possess a Doctor of Arts which afforded me analysis skills and the ability to teach art history.    My Masters of Fine Arts degree trained me in studio practice and teaching, hence, I understand both types of faculty needs and mentorship.
